Discover the breathtaking beauty of Samaria Gorge, a true gem hidden in the heart of Crete’s White Mountains (Lefka Ori). This magnificent natural wonder proudly holds the title of Europe’s longest gorge, a testament to its breathtaking size and splendour. Starting at an elevation of 1,250 metres, the 16-kilometer walk commences at the Xyloskalo entrance, situated on the Omalos plateau. The route provides amazing views along the way.

Embark on a captivating journey as you descend through Samaria, where you’ll be immersed in a rich tapestry of diverse flora and fauna. The path meanders through majestic cliffs and lush forests, adorned with ancient cypresses and pines. In 2010, Samaria Gorge gained global recognition for its untamed beauty and unique characteristics. It was honoured with a place in UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves, a testament to its rich biodiversity. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including the elusive kri-kri (Cretan goat), which can be spotted by keen-eyed hikers.

While exploring the rugged landscape, hikers will encounter wooden bridges spanning small streams, stumble upon deserted villages, and have the opportunity to visit the charming Agios Nikolaos chapel. The narrowest section of the gorge, referred to as the “Iron Gates,” is an awe-inspiring stretch where the walls of the gorge come together at a distance of just four metres, reaching heights of up to 300 metres above.

The trek, which lasts around 4-7 hours, ends at the beautiful shores of the Libyan Sea in the charming coastal village of Agia Roumeli. Here, tired explorers can unwind on untouched shorelines, take a dip in the transparent waters, and contemplate the awe-inspiring beauty of the natural world they have encountered.

Exploring Samaria Gorge goes beyond a mere walk; it offers a deep immersion into the untamed heart of Crete, showcasing the island’s breathtaking beauty and attracting both nature enthusiasts and avid trekkers. It’s an absolute must for anyone seeking a connection with nature and a thrilling outdoor adventure that is both challenging and rewarding.
