Located in a tranquil bay, Matala is famous for its stunning beach, pristine waters, and majestic cliffs that create a breathtaking setting for the village. The village has a fascinating history, attracting hippies in the 1960s and 70s with its bohemian atmosphere, natural beauty, and laid-back lifestyle. Here is the spot where Zeus, disguised as a bull, gracefully carried Europa on his back and whisked her away to Gortys. This place served as a harbour for both the Minoans and the Romans. However, for the majority of individuals, Matala is synonymous with hippies. In the late 1960s – 1970s, this quaint town was inhabited by a group of free-spirited individuals known as the “flower children”. They made their homes in the caves, which were once ancient Roman tombs.

The renowned beach of Matala, offers opportunities for swimming, sunbathing on the beautiful sandy shore, and the chance to discover the fascinating caves that once housed the hippie community. Additionally, there are ancient Roman ruins scattered along the beach, such as the remains of an amphitheatre and a Roman bath.

Once you’ve had your fill of the stunning Matala beach, take a leisurely walk through the picturesque streets of the village. The village’s traditional architecture, colourful houses, and lively atmosphere will surely captivate you. Discover the charm of the village by browsing through the unique shops, indulging in mouthwatering local dishes, or immersing yourself in the laid-back atmosphere.

As the day draws to a close, we’ll head back to Heraklion, cherishing the incredible memories we’ve made throughout the day. Experience the breathtaking natural beauty and captivating history of Crete on our trip to Matala. Create lasting memories that will leave you in awe.
