Experience the essence of Greece on this premium full-day guided tour, meticulously designed for travelers who want to bridge the gap between the Golden Age of Pericles and the vibrant energy of modern Athens. From the marble heights of the Acropolis to the dramatic cliffs of Cape Sounio, this journey offers a deep dive into the myths and milestones of Western Civilization.
Your exploration begins with a panoramic drive through the city’s architectural evolution. We start at the Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro), the only stadium in the world built entirely of white marble. It stands on the site where the ancient Panathenaic Games were held and famously hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.
As we traverse the city, you will witness the contrast between Roman grandeur and Neoclassical elegance:
The Temple of Olympian Zeus: Once housing one of the largest cult statues in the ancient world, its colossal columns remain a testament to Roman Emperor Hadrian’s ambition.
The Athens Trilogy: Admire the University of Athens, the Academy, and the National Library. These 19th-century masterpieces embody the “Neoclassical” movement, aiming to revive the aesthetic purity of ancient Greece.
Syntagma Square: Witness the Evzones (Presidential Guard) in their traditional pleated fustanellas guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in front of the Hellenic Parliament.
No visit to Athens is complete without ascending the “Sacred Rock.” Your expert guide will lead you through the Propylaea (the monumental gateway) to stand before the Parthenon. Built in the 5th century B.C. by architects Ictinus and Callicrates, this temple dedicated to Athena Parthenos is the supreme example of Doric architecture.
Following the climb, we enjoy skip-the-line entry to the Acropolis Museum. Frequently ranked among the top museums in the world, it houses the original Caryatids of the Erechtheion and the stunning Parthenon Gallery, where the frieze is displayed in the exact orientation and natural light as it once appeared on the temple.
After a morning of historical immersion, we pause for a gourmet lunch. You will dine at a TripAdvisor-awarded restaurant nestled at the foot of the Acropolis. Enjoy authentic Mediterranean cuisine, featuring fresh local ingredients and traditional recipes that have defined Greek hospitality for generations.
Following lunch, we depart the city center for a breathtaking drive along the Athenian Riviera. This scenic coastal route offers panoramic views of the Saronic Gulf, passing through the elegant suburbs of Glyfada and Vouliagmeni.
Our destination is Cape Sounio, the southernmost tip of the Attic peninsula. Here stands the Temple of Poseidon, built in 444 B.C. (the same era as the Parthenon).
Historical Lore: This is the legendary spot where King Aegeus leapt into the sea, giving the Aegean Sea its name.
The Sanctuary: Perched 60 meters above sea level, the temple served as a landmark for sailors returning to Piraeus. Keep an eye out for the name “Byron” carved into one of the columns—a remnant of the famous Philhellene poet Lord Byron’s visit in 1810.
You will have ample free time to wander the ruins, capture the perfect photograph of the Aegean horizon, and feel the powerful energy of this ancient sanctuary before our relaxing return drive to Athens.
