Join us for a memorable day exploring Elafonissi Tropical Beach, one of Crete’s most stunning and famous destinations. Known for its unique white and pink coral sands, shallow waters, and tranquil lagoon, Elafonissi offers the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure for every traveler. Our day trip will take you on a scenic journey, with stops that allow you to explore Crete’s natural beauty and local culture.
At the highest point of the island, a plaque commemorates a tragic past. On Easter Sunday, 18 April 1824, hundreds of Greeks—mostly women and children—were killed by Ottoman soldiers while hiding on Elafonisi, waiting for rescue; they were discovered when troops crossed the shallow waters, leading to a massacre in which most were killed and the rest enslaved.
The island also bears memory of a later tragedy, marked by a large wooden cross for the 1907 shipwreck of the passenger steamer Imperatrix, when 38 people died trying to reach shore and were buried there. The wreck still lies offshore and eventually led to the construction of a lighthouse, which was later destroyed by German troops during World War II.
We start our journey with a comfortable hotel pick-up to ensure you get the most out of your day. Sit back and relax as we head towards our first stop, with breathtaking views of the Cretan landscape unfolding along the way.
Next, we stop for a refreshing breakfast at Agia Sophia Cave. Here, we’ll take a 30-minute break to enjoy the beauty of this natural wonder. The cave is known for its impressive size and unique features, providing the perfect backdrop to relax and enjoy a light meal while soaking in the scenery.
After our breakfast stop, we continue our journey to Elafonissi Beach, where you’ll have 3.5 to 4 hours to explore, swim, and relax on one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete. The striking white and pink coral sands create a tropical atmosphere, while the warm, shallow waters make it a perfect spot for families and swimmers. You can take a stroll through the lagoon to the islet, a peaceful experience that reveals the untouched beauty of the coastline. Whether you choose to relax on the beach, take a dip in the crystal-clear waters, or try your hand at windsurfing, Elafonissi offers something for everyone.
Around midday, we head towards the picturesque village of Elos for a well-deserved lunch stop. We’ll spend about an hour in this charming village, where you can enjoy traditional Cretan dishes in a peaceful, rustic setting. The village offers a taste of local life, and the meal will surely be a highlight of your trip. (On Tuesdays and Sundays, the lunch stop will be at the village of Amigdalokefali instead, offering equally delicious and authentic local cuisine.)
Finally, after a fulfilling day, we begin our journey back to the hotels. You’ll be dropped off between 18:30 and 19:00, with memories of a truly special day spent discovering the natural wonders and culture of Crete.
